An independent art gallery located on the ground and basement floor of a Victorian property, just off Bond Street, in London’s famous Mayfair district.
Founded in 2014 by two former curators and directors of Tate Britain and Haunch of Venison galleries, this new independent gallery space had to be large enough to allow visitors to peruse artworks at leisure, whilst respecting and acknowledging the original architectural elements, and the restrains of a period building. Representing a broad range of contemporary artists, the interior was to be modern and stylish yet subtle enough to allow the artworks to breathe.
Zulufish undertook the architecture and build of this project, which consisted a complete refit. The team remodelled the interior space to create a large, open gallery area on the ground floor, with a contemporary staircase leading to a basement gallery space with a private viewing room below.
On the ground level, a huge skylight was installed to allow natural light to flood through the gallery.
A lighting scheme was devised with rows of adjustable spot lights on tracks running along the ceiling to focus on and illuminate the artworks.
The walls, ceiling and concealed doors were painted in a soft white, with the exposed industrial elements, such as pipework painted in the same shade, for a modern, urban feel.
Lime washed oak flooring was laid throughout the gallery, including the staircase, providing a sense of calm, whilst adding warmth.
This modern, minimal and light-filled backdrop offers a foil to the cutting-edge art exhibited here. It allows the work to stand out and speak for its self, and for visitors to browse the exhibits in a calm and relaxed atmosphere.
