West London Townhouse

This semi-detached Victorian property was completely reimagined by the Zulufish team. We extended the loft and ground floor, added a new basement and reorientated the property to create a double-height atrium above the front door, thus creating a real statement entrance to this stunning family home.

The owners wanted to create a feeling of space and light, and a generous welcoming area for guests, something Victorian properties can lack.

This residential project was featured in an extensive 8-page article in Livingetc’s March 2024 issue. Read the full story here.

Our team removed a section of the first floor directly above the entrance hallway to establish a double-height atrium at the entrance. This created an incredible sense of space and light, and a real wow factor upon entering the property. We added character with encaustic b&w graphic floor tiles.

By combining the double-height entrance with a hallway in the centre of the property, we created a natural flow between the crittal doors to the front living room and the kitchen / family room to the rear, linking the spaces and creating a line of sight from the front room right through to the garden designed by Aoba Landscapes.

The front living room is decorated with colourful accessories, like a bespoke Jennifer Manners rug, and balanced by a full-width bespoke shelving unit created with HUX.

Planning constraints meant we had to work with restricted height to the boundary for the ground floor extension. We dug down to create extra ceiling height, locating the kitchen under the new extension and disguised the restricted height internally with a polished plaster wall above the kitchen units.

The bespoke kitchen by HUX London features cabinets in a mix of wood veneer and Squid Ink by Paint & Paper Library, with aged brass finger pulls and stunning Dekton worktops. A display dresser and large format Domus floor tiles complete the look.

Over the dining table and complimenting the scheme, hangs a painting by Lucie Winterson ‘Stone In Water’ from Aleph Contemporary.

The living area is given a lovely cosy feel by the limewash paint and the copper tones of the TV wall, expertly designed and manufactured by HUX. Stylish additions such as the Roche Bobois sofa, a custom made bespoke tribal stool and glass coffee table with aged brass and brown velum finish the scheme.

By creating the double height void over the front door, we sacrificed a box room to the front. The design brief was for the master suite and childrens rooms to be located on the first floor, so we designed the master suite to the rear overlooking the garden.

:

In here we added a bespoke HUX bed with floating bedside tables and created a feature wall with a beautiful textured wall covering. The ensuite is light and super luxe with faux concrete tiles and a double vanity by Scavolini Tratto with melamine worktop in Concrete Jersey.

In this bathroom, the aim was to infuse an element of surprise into the otherwise neutral and textural space. Smart brass inlays embellish the cabinetry, a detail which is then continued through the taps, towel rail and shower fixtures. These details evoke the refined ambiance of a smart hotel bathroom.

The removal of the eaves to create extra tall ceilings meant the kids bedrooms were given additional character and much needed clever storage. The bedrooms are vibrant and personalised, featuring unique touches like a magnetised wall behind dinosaur wallpaper for a boy’s room and architectural enhancements for a dramatic effect in the daughter’s room.

At the top of the house, a generous skylight crowns the staircase, bathing the entire core of the house with an abundance of natural light. In the evening, intelligent lighting comes alive, illuminating the skylight’s frame with vibrant, colourful accents that transform this architectural feature into a striking focal point.

The second floor now boasts an impressive open-plan study with views across the rooftops. For the family’s remote work needs, we crafted a workspace that could serve multiple functions—a place for dedicated desk work, as well as a retreat for relaxation throughout the day. HUX‘s bespoke shelving unit serves this dual purpose, housing favourite objects and reference books.
