A Victorian terraced ‘workers’ cottage with kitchen-diner, utility room, sitting room and WC on the ground floor; and three bedrooms (one en-suite), a study and a family bathroom on the first and second floors.
The owner of this property has a demanding career in the city and is a keen rower, so loved its proximity to the river. She wanted a ‘modern urban cottage’, somewhere warm and cosy to come home to, yet also light, and spacious enough to entertain friends and family.
The property was dilapidated and had a small footprint. We opened up the ground floor with a full-width rear extension, converted the loft and added a full-with mansard to locate the master suite. Our team was able to almost double the space whilst retaining the property’s original charm.
The rear of the house was demolished and reconfigured. The sitting room remains at the front of the property, which is flooded with natural light, while a spectacular kitchen-diner was located at the back, connecting with the beautifully redesigned garden.
Three skylights and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors were installed to bring light into the kitchen-diner. Stylish herringbone panelling adds a traditional touch, while cleverly designed grey timber-veneered cabinetry by HUX London, a marble splash-back and concrete worktops provide a mix of textures to soften the contemporary style.
The island includes a breakfast bar, houses integrated appliances and offers further storage for minimal visual clutter, while the range-cooker and charming metal pendants hint at rustic style. An electric blue sofa, vintage table and industrial Tolix-style chairs provide areas for dining and lounging.
The stairs, utility and WC were tucked into the middle of the house to allow a central walkway to link with the sitting room, and provide hidden storage. Eye-catching panelling and a wood-burning stove were teamed with a vibrant lilac sofa, a stylish striped rug and chic lighting for a room that’s comfortable and cosy yet fresh and modern
On the first floor, a child’s bedroom has been given a charming look with soft colours, a beautiful day-bed, a vintage desk and quirky lampshades.
The bathroom has timeless appeal, with large-scale porcelain floor tiles, grey wall tiles and heritage-style brassware.
On the second floor, clever configuration allows for a master bedroom and en-suite shower room with a bespoke vintage vanity unit. A striking scheme was created with beautiful geometric wallpaper, hexagonal tiles, vintage pieces and a rich mix of neutral tones and textures.
