Putney Family Home

A detached Edwardian house in Putney. The top floor has two children’s bedrooms (both en-suite). Below are the master suite, dressing room, guest bedroom (en-suite) and a spectacular study with mezzanine level. The ground floor features a large hallway, sitting room, family room, utility room and kitchen-dining space overlooking the garden.

Settling here from overseas to start new jobs in the film industry, this couple wanted a family home where they could put down roots and entertain friends. They wanted an open ground floor with inter-connecting rooms that could be closed off when required. On the upper floors they foresaw a master bedroom suite, en-suite bedrooms for the children, a guest room and a show-stopping study. It wasn’t necessary to extend the footprint but the layout required opening up and cleverly reconfiguring, with a complete redesign in a modern British yet timeless style.

On the ground floor everything started with the remodelling of the living space and kitchen. A corridor from the hall to the kitchen was removed and the existing rear extension rebuilt with the addition of two huge roof lights and glass sliding doors.

Beautiful cappuccino-coloured cabinetry designed by HUX London and appliances were run along one side, with a chic bar area and complementary storage opposite. A large island with a rich timber perpendicular breakfast bench balances the room and a striking dining table by Lema provides a stylish feature.

Three sets of elegant glass, panelled double doors and bespoke cabinetry connect the living areas and hallway.

The table combines four different materials and finishes as a pallisander veneer, black lacquer, polished brass, and aged brass. All these components cross and integrate harmoniously, creating the contemporary feeling in this room.

The rest of the house does not disappoint. The design of the unique dining room bar joinery, again produced by HUX London, is stylish, contemporary and warm.

In the family room there’s a beautiful custom-made bookcase, with storage for children’s toys, and shelves for books and ornaments.

Colourful Paul Smith rugs formed the basis for the design scheme and its beautiful mix of hues were echoed through sumptuous furniture and accessories. Each of the rooms is completed with statement lighting: stunning sculptural hoop pendants by Cameron Design House in the family and sitting rooms and beautiful bubble-like glass spheres by Giapato & Coombes in the kitchen-diner.

On the first floor, a second bedroom was sacrificed for the master suite, allowing for an en-suite bathroom and dressing room. A super-wide upholstered headboard brings a high-end hotel feel to the bedroom. Opposite a fabulous 3D feature wall conceals a TV and storage.

The en-suite has a modern luxury spa feel with a deep oval bath and design-led brassware.

A small bedroom was opened into the eaves, creating a double height mezzanine level study with a spectacular custom-designed wenge bookcase with bronze railings and ladder as a feature.

On the second floor, the loft space was the ideal location for two children’s’ en-suite bedrooms, each designed to be fun and functional.
